Igualada Cemetery (Igualada, Spain)

Igualada Cemetery (Igualada, Spain)
With its non traditional design, this cemetery became one of the most poetic works of twentieth century Catalan architecture.

About the cemetery

Igualada Cemetery, also referred to as the New Cemetery, is a cemetery in Igualada, near Barcelona in Spain. It was designed by the architects Enric Miralles and Carme Pinós after they won an architectural competition in 1984. The construction took place between 1985 and 1994 as a replacement for the Old Cemetery.

Away from the concept of a traditional cemetery, the new project aimed to show the installation of a park to stroll without being surrounded by the typical images of such premises. The proposal was to cut into the floor, and locate the tombs into the walls, so that the cemetery would be integrated with the terrain and landscape.

The whole enclosure contains corners, objects and details that constantly play with light and shade, giving a great symbolism to the entire place and the new cemetery soon became widely known as one of the most poetic works of twentieth century Catalan architecture. It has also been awarded with the FAD Architecture Prize.
