About the cemetery
The parish of Palmerstown (Irish: Baile Phámar), also known as Palmerston, has been known by this name since the twelfth century. At that time, the lands here were held by the Hospital of St. John the Baptist without Newgate, otherwise known as the Palmer's Hospital, from the name of its founder Ailred the Palmer, or Pilgrim.
The Dublin Cemeteries Committee, established by Daniel O'Connell in 1828, has been continuously seeking to open other Cemeteries and Crematoria. In 1978, to meet the needs for the population of Dublin’s south side, Palmerstown Cemetery was opened. Like all the other Cemeteries established by The Dublin Cemeteries Committee after this time, the Palmerstown Cemetery was designed as a lawn cemetery – consisting of landscaped graves, with all graves accessible by paths.
Palmerstown Cemetery is located in a suburban area of Dublin, Ireland, west of the city centre, and it is being used to burry the deceased from the local areas of Palmerstown and Ballyfermot. The cemetery is in sharp contrast to the Victorian Cemeteries at Goldenbridge and Glasnevin, by moving away from the large limestone Celtic Crosses to the smaller black and white marble monuments.
