The cemetery has had various titles including The Cemetery by the Common and Hill Lane Cemetery but is mostly known as the Southampton Old Cemetery.
About the cemetery
This Victorian cemetery in the ‘garden’ style pioneered by J.C. Loudon, opened in 1846. Initially it covered only 10 acres (4 hectares) but was later expanded to 27 acres (11 hectares).
The cemetery layout was designed and implemented by local nurseryman W.H. Rogers. The main buildings were designed by Frederick Francis of London and built by local builder John Foot. The Anglican chapel is built in Norman style, Nonconformist chapel in Early English style and Lodge and gate in Tudor style.

These buildings, together with the original wall, gateposts and two memorials, are listets Grade II by English Heritage.
