On 3 June, Westerveld Cemetery & Crematorium in the Netherlands organized a special evening walk
through the monumental memorial park.
The graves of famous people, such as artists and politicians, were also part of the tour. “It was a unique experience, wonderful to spend an evening discovering so many special spots in the park's rolling landscape. I'm definitely going to do the walk again soon on my own and follow the information signs that Westerveld has placed around the park”, said an enthusiastic visitor.
‘Week of the Cemetery’
The walk was organized as part of the ‘Week of discovering European Cemeteries’, organized for years throughout Europe at the initiative of the Association of Significant Cemeteries (ASCE). But this year's was the first in the Netherlands. The ASCE considers cemeteries to be an important cultural legacy, and Westerveld was the first cemetery in the Netherlands to be accepted to the prestigious ASCE. Other members include the monumental Père-Lachaise in Paris, Montjuic in Barcelona and Cimitero del Verano in Rome.
