The visualisation separately includes Žale Cemetery, the other 17 cemeteries managed by our company and Plečnik's Žale Cemetery, where users can also see the virtual interior of the mortuary.
We have upgraded ways in which to visualise cemeteries in the Ljubljana Municipality on the occasion of the Heritage Days of European Cemeteries 2015, organised by the Association of Significant Cemeteries of Europe (ASCE).
By offering a virtual tour and exploration of the cemeteries we made the cemeteries even more attractive for visitors. The visualisation is useful both for tourists and for e-learning – for example, for architecture students who can access detailed visual information at any time.
Žale Cemetery
At Žale Cemetery, users can search for an important deceased person or their grave by consulting one of the interactive maps or selecting the person from an alphabetical list. The latter is divided into four thematic sections: "General", "Poets and Writers", "Actors" and "War Graves". There are over 100 info points available, each containing an additional description of the grave or the deceased.
Beginnings of the project
We pioneered the project in 2005, being one of the first companies to offer this service in the world. The 360° interactive spatial photography creates a kind of virtual reality, allowing the visitor to use their computer screen to interact with the visual image of the documented location, "as if they were there, on the spot". The visualisation is shown using the latest technology and display trend; it uses the very high resolution "photo-sampling" method, enabling interactive "remote viewing", offering even more detail than if the visitor were actually there.
Use of the visualisation
Because of the high resolution and the "it's-like-I'm-there" feeling, it is mainly intended to be used with large computer screens; however, it is also possible to use tablet computers. We are also the first in the world to offer "optional" access via mobile phones which use the Android or iOS operating systems. If the user's device has a built-in gyroscope, it is likewise possible to use the automatic 360° tracking option which changes the spatial photography according to the user's movement/turning in space.
